-
- These release notes describe IRIS ATM release 2.3.11. IRIS
- ATM is a network interface controller (board and software)
- providing Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) with ATM
- adaptation layer 5 (AAL5) protocol mapping over Synchronous
- Optical Network (SONET) connectivity at 155.52 megabits per
- second (OC3c) for Silicon Graphics Origin 3000, Onyx 3000,
- Origin 2000, Onyx2, Origin 200 GIGAchannel, CHALLENGE, POWER
- CHALLENGE, Onyx, and POWER Onyx servers and supercomputers.
-
- IRIS ATM supports both permanent virtual channels (PVCs) and
- switched virtual channels (SVCs). For SVCs, the product
- complies with the ATM Forum's ATM User-Network Interface
- standard, versions 3.0 and 3.1. The product supports
- constant bit rate (CBR) and best effort traffic, and
- supports use of peak cell rate, sustainable cell rate, and
- maximum burst size on the transmission channels. IRIS ATM
- supports IP-over-ATM in compliance with RFC 1577 and RFC
- 1755. The encapsulation method for carrying network
- interconnect traffic over ATM AAL5 conforms to RFC 1483.
- In addition, IRIS ATM supports SPANS (Simple Protocol for
- ATM Network Signaling) on the Origin and Onyx2 platforms.
-
- The driver supports all standard IP applications through
- SVCs using a best effort traffic contract. The driver also
- supports a character device application programming
- interface (API) for customer-developed applications. This
- API supports PVCs (both IP and non-IP) and non-IP SVCs.
-
- Note: Packaged with this software is a separate sheet that
- contains the Software License Agreement. This
- software is provided to you solely under the terms
- and conditions of the Software License Agreement.
- Please take a few moments to review the Agreement.
-
- IRIS ATM can be installed onto the following platforms:
- Origin 3000, Onyx 3000, Origin 2000, Onyx2, Origin 200
- GIGAchannel, CHALLENGE and POWER CHALLENGE L, CHALLENGE and
- POWER CHALLENGE XL, Onyx and POWER Onyx Deskside, and Onyx
- and POWER Onyx Rackmount.

- Each IRIS ATM board provides four bi-directional links that
- support multiple simultaneous virtual channel connections,
- which can be a mix of permanent (PVC) and switched (SVC)
- channels. The IRIS ATM board interfaces to the system
- through the XIO interconnect, requiring one XIO slot.
- Multiple IRIS ATM boards can be installed; the exact number

- Each IRIS ATM board provides one bi-directional link that
- supports multiple simultaneous virtual channel connections,
- which can be a mix of permanent (PVC) and switched (SVC)
- channels. The IRIS ATM board interfaces to the operating
- system through the IBus, requiring one mezzanine slot on any
- IO4 board.
-
- IRIS ATM is designed for installation by authorized service
- personnel only.

- IRIS ATM software is a set of applications, a driver, and
- ATM protocol modules that must be built into the system's
- installed operating system. The currently installed
- operating system (_e_o_e) must be version 6.5 for installation
- of IRIS ATM to proceed. The _v_e_r_s_i_o_n_s command, as shown
- below, can be used to determine the version of the currently
- running IRIX. This IRIS ATM release requires the operating
- system release shown in the example below:
-
-
- % versions eoe
- I eoe _d_a_t_e Execution Only Environment, 6.5
-
-
- 1.5 _H_a_r_d_w_a_r_e__R_e_q_u_i_r_e_m_e_n_t_s
-
- The installed IRIS ATM-OC3c 4Port XIO board must be version
- 030-0948-003, or later. Prior versions of the IRIS ATM-OC3c
- 4Port XIO board are not compatible with IRIS ATM 2.3.x
- software. The board's version is indicated by a tag placed
- near the board's XIO connector on the tall-component side.
-
- The installed IRIS ATM-OC3c board (for CHALLENGE/Onyx) must
- be version 030-0570-007, Rev.B, or later. Prior versions of
- the IRIS ATM-OC3c board are not compatible with IRIS ATM
- 2.3.x software due to their lack of a MAC address. The
- board's version is indicated by a tag placed near the
- board's IBus connector on the component side.
-
- For the IRIS ATM software to operate, the IRIS ATM hardware
- must be installed and connected to one of the following: to
- another ATM system, to an ATM switch, or to itself (using a
- loopback cable). In order to use SVCs, the adjacent system
- must support ATM UNI signalling. In order for the IRIS ATM
- ILMI module to operate, the adjacent system must be running
- an ATM ILMI module that complies with ATM UNI 3.0 or 3.1.
-
- Note: When connected via a loopback cable, the hardware
- verification utility (atmtest) can be used to test

- the board's functionality, but upper-layer
- applications cannot be verified, since they route
- through the operating system's loopback interface
- (lo0) whenever the destination address is local.

- IRIS ATM does not support loading the miniroot over the ATM
- connection; Silicon Graphics computers cannot be booted over
- ATM. This limitation does not affect loading the miniroot
- over an Ethernet network. A system can boot (load the
- miniroot) over its Ethernet network, and, thereafter,
- function with both Ethernet and ATM network connections.
-
- Note: There are special configuration requirements for
- booting over the network. See Section 2.3,
- ``Configuring a Diskless Station.''
