  10.        These release notes describe IRIS ATM release 2.3.11. IRIS
  11.        ATM is a network interface controller (board and software)
  12.        providing Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) with ATM
  13.        adaptation layer 5 (AAL5) protocol mapping over Synchronous
  14.        Optical Network (SONET) connectivity at 155.52 megabits per
  15.        second (OC3c) for Silicon Graphics Origin 3000, Onyx 3000,
  16.        Origin 2000, Onyx2, Origin 200 GIGAchannel, CHALLENGE, POWER
  17.        CHALLENGE, Onyx, and POWER Onyx servers and supercomputers.

  19.        IRIS ATM supports both permanent virtual channels (PVCs) and
  20.        switched virtual channels (SVCs). For SVCs, the product
  21.        complies with the ATM Forum's ATM User-Network Interface
  22.        standard, versions 3.0 and 3.1.  The product supports
  23.        constant bit rate (CBR) and best effort traffic, and
  24.        supports use of peak cell rate, sustainable cell rate, and
  25.        maximum burst size on the transmission channels. IRIS ATM
  26.        supports IP-over-ATM in compliance with RFC 1577 and RFC
  27.        1755.  The encapsulation method for carrying network
  28.        interconnect traffic over ATM AAL5 conforms to RFC 1483.
  29.        In addition, IRIS ATM supports SPANS (Simple Protocol for
  30.        ATM Network Signaling) on the Origin and Onyx2 platforms.

  32.        The driver supports all standard IP applications through
  33.        SVCs using a best effort traffic contract.  The driver also
  34.        supports a character device application programming
  35.        interface (API) for customer-developed applications.  This
  36.        API supports PVCs (both IP and non-IP) and non-IP SVCs.

  239.        IRIS ATM software is a set of applications, a driver, and
  240.        ATM protocol modules that must be built into the system's
  241.        installed operating system.  The currently installed
  242.        operating system (_e_o_e) must be version 6.5 for installation
  243.        of IRIS ATM to proceed. The _v_e_r_s_i_o_n_s  command, as shown
  244.        below, can be used to determine the version of the currently
  245.        running IRIX.  This IRIS ATM release requires the operating
  246.        system release shown in the example below:

  255.        The installed IRIS ATM-OC3c 4Port XIO board must be version
  256.        030-0948-003, or later.  Prior versions of the IRIS ATM-OC3c
  257.        4Port XIO board are not compatible with IRIS ATM 2.3.x
  258.        software. The board's version is indicated by a tag placed
  259.        near the board's XIO connector on the tall-component side.
  260.  
  261.        The installed IRIS ATM-OC3c board (for CHALLENGE/Onyx) must
  262.        be version 030-0570-007, Rev.B, or later.  Prior versions of
  263.        the IRIS ATM-OC3c board are not compatible with IRIS ATM
  264.        2.3.x software due to their lack of a MAC address. The
  265.        board's version is indicated by a tag placed near the
  266.        board's IBus connector on the component side.

  268.        For the IRIS ATM software to operate, the IRIS ATM hardware
  269.        must be installed and connected to one of the following: to
  270.        another ATM system, to an ATM switch, or to itself (using a
  271.        loopback cable). In order to use SVCs, the adjacent system
  272.        must support ATM UNI signalling. In order for the IRIS ATM
  273.        ILMI module to operate, the adjacent system must be running
  274.        an ATM ILMI module that complies with ATM UNI 3.0 or 3.1.

  277.               verification utility (atmtest) can be used to test

  295.               through the operating system's loopback interface

  301.        IRIS ATM does not support loading the miniroot over the ATM
  302.        connection; Silicon Graphics computers cannot be booted over
  303.        ATM.  This limitation does not affect loading the miniroot
  304.        over an Ethernet network.  A system can boot (load the
  305.        miniroot) over its Ethernet network, and, thereafter,
  306.        function with both Ethernet and ATM network connections.
